//* Europe's number one consumer electronics retailer

Better product recommendations, faster delivery and more precise availability: technology is fast becoming the key distinguishing factor between retailers in the world of digital retail. MediaMarktSaturn is increasingly developing into a technology-driven company. We’re in contact with our customers about 6 million times a day – and together with you, we want to enrich their digital lives.

Tech transformation - Andy Wolfe our CTO is giving you a look under the engine hood - A modern technology stack - cloud, API & headless - underpins our omnichannel vision. About 50% of our IT landscape is already deployed in the cloud, indicating our commitment to cloud adoption. Alongside technology, the supply chain is the backbone of the omnichannel vision for creating a seamless customer experience. Want to learn more? Watch this video-presentation!

//* Project or challenge #1: MediaMarktSaturn e-commerce platform

We’re developing our e-commerce platform with the following state-of-the-art frameworks and technologies:

#TypeScript #ReactJS #NodeJS #StyledComponents #GraphQL #Google Cloud Platform #Contentful #Cloudflare #Optimizely #Phrase #Saucelabs #NX #...

We’re using the MediaMarktSaturn webshop platform to drive cutting edge engineering technologies in order to deliver great features to our customers at MediaMarkt and Saturn in 13 countries across Europe.

Imagine operating an omnichannel-business in 13 countries, where many country organizations have built their own webshops for years and the background conditions vary from one to the next. Consequently, new features in the pipeline have to be developed multiple times.
We had to put a stop to this – by building a single global e-commerce platform.

The idea of powering the same platform into all our country organizations kicked off with a new office in Munich and working agile in cross-functional teams including engineers, product owners, UX designers, data analysts and agile coaches.

So far, we’ve already developed, standardized and rolled out new webshops for Germany (one each for MediaMarkt and Saturn), Austria, Spain and the Netherlands.

To enhance daily product work, we’ve established a crew model to focus one day per sprint on aspects like page speed, accessibility, developer experience, and many more. This enables our employees to move out of daily product-related work and focus on topics that are important horizontally across the platform.

//* Project or challenge #2: MediaMarktSaturn Marketplace

We power the Marketplace with the following technologies and frameworks:

#TypeScript #React #NodeJS #MongoDB #GraphQL #Google Cloud Platform #Google Pub/Sub #Gitops #...

The MediaMarktSaturn Marketplace expands our webshop product portfolio, enabling us to offer our customers the right products at any time and in any given situation.

MediaMarktSaturn Marketplace complements our current business model by opening up our webshop platform to a wide range of third-party sellers. To enable vendors to drive their sales, we’re integrating a full order lifecycle into the existing e-commerce landscape. This entails close collaboration with over 20 different product teams.

Due to our rapid growth, we’re using cutting edge technology to handle the large amounts of data.

As scaling is the biggest challenge for a marketplace, we decided to work on a scalable microservice architecture which is accessible for our customer-facing touchpoints as well as our back-office applications. Our self-organized teams deploy all our apps independently from a monorepo, allowing us to reuse code and making testing between services simple and fast.

<fact>In a nutshell: We build it, we run it, we ship it. We own it.</fact>

"My personal motivation is to support and promote women in MediaMarktSaturn Technology, both in professional and leadership careers. The most important tools on the way to a solution are communication and collaboration. I stand for clarity and commitment and have a soft spot for unconventional ideas. *and now with a twinkle in my eye* We'd be happy to go in search of the unicorn together."

//* Project or challenge #3: MediaMarktSaturn Marketing and Commercial

The MediaMarktSaturn discount and voucher system makes us competitive and offers great deals to our customers.

#Kotlin #MongoDB #Redis #Kubernetes #Google Cloud Platform #GitOps with FluxCD #Flagger #Prometheus #Grafana #Ktor #Koin #Vert.x #...

Being a customer-focused retailer, we’re determined to always come up with attractive prices and interesting marketing campaigns. In a fast-moving market like ours, we need to be able to implement discount promotions quickly and consistently in each of our sales channels, online and brick-and-mortar, so that we can always offer our customers the advertised price.

Discount coupons must be easily redeemable at any time in accordance with their terms and conditions. To avoid financial risks, multiple redemptions mustn’t occur, even under heavy strain.

In order to be able to serve a highly fluctuating customer volume with undiminished service quality, we created a completely reactive microservice architecture whose individual components can react to load changes swiftly and reliably thanks to a high degree of autonomy and flexible scaling.

Exceptionally high quality standards, a lean, modern technology stack, and full automation of all processes (including automatic canary deployment in the event of version or configuration changes) enable our small, interdisciplinary engineering team to achieve great things.

//* Project or challenge #4: Analytics

#BigQuery #Dataflow #Dataform #datafusion #PubSup #cloudcomposer #tableau #Spark #python #SQL #Teradata #SAPBO

As Europe’s number one provider of consumer electronics, we’re in the midst of technological transformation preparing us to cope with digital challengers, and are becoming a true omnichannel retailer. This ambitious scenario has prompted us to rethink how to leverage data and build analytics solutions.

We believe four ingredients are essential for proper analytics:

High-quality data foundation. We continue to overcome historical data silos and offer their content as ready-to-hand data assets and models. We go beyond raw data, speak to data owners, understand semantics, and reflect underlying business processes. For us, data needs to be comprehensive and easy to use.

Right tools and methods. We continuously evaluate best practices in the market, collect insights from analytical thought leaders, and get our hands dirty with proofs of concept. Serverless technology helps our customers focus on the cool stuff.

Strong analytics governance. At MMS, we follow the decentralized approach of a data mesh organization giving our 190+ product teams as much engineering freedom as possible. This flexibility needs to be accompanied by a set of golden rules and guardrails. We define central rules and blueprints like developer guidelines, naming conventions and a data strategy to ensure that data lands in our BigQuery ecosystem in a standardized, easy-to-use and understandable manner.

A single analytics engineering community. We’re home to the analytics community of practitioners and regularly host events where “data people” across 25 domains and 12 countries share their knowledge and best practices, connect with each other, and think about common problems they want to solve.

//* Project or challenge #5: UX Design

#UXDesign #DesignSystem #UI #UserResearch #Date-aware design decisions

Being responsible for so many different products and ensuring a consistent user experience can sometimes be a challenge. We’re creating an accessible omnichannel user experience for our users in all the countries where MediaMarktSaturn operates.

In a field that’s constantly changing and growing, where time pressure and economic changes seem to be dictating companies’ decisions, it can be hard to stick to our convictions and maintain our user-centred design approach.

We’ve developed our own design system based on the atomic design principle. It allows us to have a consistent design language, cross-functional collaboration, and fast and scalable design. We design our products based on collected data to ensure we drive our user experience across all our products. We study our users’ needs and research their behaviour. We validate our approaches and test our hypotheses. We know the desires and frustrations of our users, and use this knowledge to drive our agenda, because first and foremost we have a user-centric mindset.
